Down in Valley City, the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder had themselves a weekend, taking six straight wins for the Hi-Liner Classic championship Saturday, September 14.
The Thunder won matches in pool play over Ellendale (25-16, 25-22), Four Winds-Minnewaukan (25-11, 25-11) and defeated Oak Grove on points, 48-40 (23-25, 25-15).
In the Gold Bracket, M/P-B advanced with a three-set win over Our Redeemer's of Minot (25-22, 19-25 and 15-13) and sweep over Wyndmere/Lidgerwood (25-22, 25-20) before defeating the host Hi-Liners in another tight match that went three games, 25-23, 11-25 and 16-14. With their performance, the Thunder improved to 12-3 on the season.
Carrington took on Maple River and North Border in their pool. The Cardinals fell to the Raiders, 19-25 and 22-25, and flipped the script with a straight-set win over the Eagles, 25-13 and 25-10.
Their stay in the City of Bridges was short-lived, however, as Langdon Area/Munich knocked out the Cards, 14-25, 25-19 and 10-15 in Gold Bracket play.
Griggs/Midkota was the final local squad in action. They were defeated in three straight matches in pool play, falling to the Jamestown junior varsity (10-25, 19-25), LA/M (17-25, 18-25) and W/L (16-25, 17-25).
Silver Bracket action was where the Titans found their footing, taking a comeback three-set victory against Hatton/Northwood (23-25, 25-19, 15-12), a sweep over North Border (25-20, 25-20) and another win over Ellendale in three (25-18, 18-25, 15-9) before the Blue Jay jayvees exacted another two-set loss on G/M, 17-25 and 21-25, in the bracket championship.
Following Saturday, Carrington's overall record was 3-3, while G-M sat at 6-8.
