From the time of its founding 108 years ago by the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Center has provided invaluable critical access care for the residents of east-central North Dakota with compassion, skill, and patient-centered outcomes.
The hospital began under the direction of Srs. Catherine Haertzen and Bernadette Liston in 1916. It was expanded in 1955 with an additional two-story structure which now houses the CMC administrative offices, and further expansion brought about Holy Family Guest Home (later Holy Family Villa; now CMC West and Summit Physical Therapy) in 1964. The original hospital building was demolished in 1977 to make room for the construction of Foster County Medical Center (CHI St. Alexius Health Medical Clinic and Urgent Care) the following year, and the new hospital opened its doors in 1986.
CHI St. Alexius Carrington President Jodi Hovdenes has worked in various capacities at the hospital since 2000, moving into the top leadership position in September 2022.
"Our goal is to provide the best care in the safest manner to every individual we see," Hovdenes said.
One of the amenities of which the hospital is especially proud is the new 3-D digital mammography system, which takes on special significance during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
Other modern upgrades at the hospital include a remodel to the emergency room in 2016, and an upgraded 64-slice low dose CT scanner installed this past June.
Serving the rural patients of the state is of the utmost priority to the hospital and clinic. CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington Medical Center has been named a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital on eight occasions, and made the Top 100 11 times.
The hospital's mission is to "...make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while we advance social justice for all."
