The Great Pumpkins

County contest winners named -

A 155-pound pumpkin grown by Mason Cook took first place at the 2024 Foster County Pumpkin Contest, held at The Market in Carrington City Park on Sept. 17.

Cook competed in the senior youth division. In the junior youth division, Lois Wede entered the heaviest pumpkin at 87 pounds, while Steve Zwinger's 143-pound pumpkin won in the adult division.

The contest saw participation from four adults and 23 youths, showcasing a total of 31 pumpkins.

The awards for best traditional pumpkin went to Colin Coulter (junior youth), Amina Musa (senior youth) and Steve Zwinger (adult).

The most unique pumpkin honors were awarded to Harvey Matteson (junior youth), Mason Cook (senior youth) and Jerry Garling (adult).

This year's event also featured competitions for the largest potato and largest onion.

In the adult division, Nancy Schneider excelled, winning both categories with a giant onion weighing 3 pounds, 1 ounce and a russet potato at 2 pounds, 7 ounces.

In the youth division, Lydia Cook brought home the prize for the largest potato at 1 pound, 8 ounces, while Harvey Matteson claimed the largest onion, weighing 1 pound, 10 ounces.

NDSU Extension agent Jeff Gale organized the contest to spark interest in gardening. Gale says he plans to offer the contest again next year.

Hi-Way Drive-In sponsored the weigh-off. Carrington Garden Club members Dennis Swanson and Janice Harildstad served as judges.
