Alice Gudmundson
Alice Laverne Gudmundson, 95, of Carrington, N.D., passed away Sept. 21, 2024, at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, N.D.
Her visitation was held Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m., all at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington, N.D. Rev. Ritchie Cole officiated. Recorded music was "Going Home" by Daniel O' Donnell, "How Great Thou Art" by Carrie Underwood and "Beyond The Sunset" by B.J. Thomas.
Her burial was at Cavalier Cemetery, Cavalier, N.D.
Pallbearers were Aaron Nord, John Tweten and Jim Hambrick, Jeff Ficek, Wes Heinley and Jack Gudmundson. Honorary pallbearers were all of Alice's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alice Laverne Werner was born June 18, 1929, to Rudolph and Emily Werner in Cavalier, N.D. Alice grew up on a farm near Cavalier and graduated from Cavalier High School in 1947.
On Dec. 1, 1948, she married Ronald Thurston in Brainerd, Minn. They lived in Cavalier, where Alice was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She was a Cub Scout leader and coached a Pee Wee baseball team. Ronald passed away on Nov. 17, 1954.
On April 3rd, 1958, Alice married Pete Gudmundson in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They lived in Cavalier before moving to Carrington in 1972, where they owned the Coast to Coast hardware store. She was president of District 14 Republican Women of Foster County and belonged to Eastern Star. Pete passed away on December 19th, 1977.
She continued living in Carrington, working as a CNA at Golden Acres Manor for 20 years.
Alice was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Alice loved watching sports of all kinds, especially the Carrington Cardinals and the NDSU Bison.
Alice enjoyed traveling and had many adventures. Some highlights of her travels were trips to Costa Rica with her friend, Jay Nitschke, and Washington, D.C. with her son, Peter.
Alice also enjoyed making scrapbooks for her family. She included important dates, documents, photographs and special occasions, providing a historical guide for her family. Alice made a signature book for each of her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Alice cherished time with her family, taking every opportunity to be together.
She is remembered by her sons Peter Gudmundson, Carrington, N.D., and John (Bobbi) Gudmundson, O'Fallon, Mo.; daughters-in-law Lori Thurston (Richard), Grand Forks, N.D. and Janice Schuerman (Robert), Columbia, Mo.; grandchildren Emily (John) Tweten, Molly Marek (Aaron Nord), Maddie Gudmundson and Jack (Michelle) Gudmundson; great- grandchildren Laila Alice and Makson, Maisyn, Kashden, Stetsen, Rogan and Stevie; siblings Frances Winzer, Fargo, N.D., Verna Schluchter, Minot N.D., and Donald Werner, Beardstown, Ill.; and her very dear friend, Jay Nitschke of Jamestown, N.D.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Floyd; husbands Ronald and Pete; Sons Richard and Robert; grandchildren Cody and Casey (Richard and Lori) Thurston; brothers and sisters-in-law Henry Winzer, Merle Schluchter, Nina Werner and Jonina Gudmundson.
