Although the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets and the Carrington Cardinals are in different regions, the rivalry is still aflame.
On Thursday, Sept. 19, the Rockets hosted the rivals to the south during the Cardinals' homecoming week, in hopes of being named the homecoming crushers once again.
After three games, the Rockets were still working out their kinks and trying to get a good rotation locked in. With that, NR-S senior Tillie Swart made her varsity debut during the second and third sets against the Cardinals and even earned herself a block.
However, the Rockets were unable to capitalize on the Cardinals and took a 3-0 loss (19-25, 19-25, 15-25).
Isabel Wendel, Calleigh Hewitt and Harper Kollman manned the net for Carrington, with each scoring eight, seven and seven kills, respectively. Kollman was also on point with her blocks, earning two for the Cardinals.
Top hitters for the Rockets were junior Ava Peterson with 15 and sophomore Emmie Belquist with eight. Along with Swart's block, Kaiya O'Connor was also able to get her hands up on an attempted kill by the Cardinals to earn herself a block as well.
The Cardinals had four athletes scoring in double digits in digs – Mercedes Lura with 19, Kenadie Pazdernik with 17, Wendel with 15 and Kollman with 11. As for the Rockets, O'Connor and Logan Cudworth each had double digits, O'Connor with 14 and Cudworth with 12.
The Cardinals were victorious in the B-squad, C-squad, eighth and seventh grade games as well. B-squad, eighth and seventh each swept the Rockets in two, and C-squad won, 2-1.
Carrington 3, LaMoure/L-M 0
Carrington had a slow start to set one, but put together one of their most complete performances to date in a three-set sweep over District 5 rival LaMoure/Litchville-Marion on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the East Gym.
The Cards put their athleticism on display against a Lobo squad with decent height, and kept the L/L-M back court guessing with 11 aces.
CHS got their balance going up front with 33 total kills. Nine of those went to Wendel, and she also posted four blocks. Kollman also had a nice well-rounded game with seven kills, four aces, and 17 digs, and Hoornaert had five kills and three blocks for the Cards in the victory.
The win evened Carrington's District 5 record at 1-1 and put them above the .500 mark for the season at 5-4, while the Loboes took their first loss in league play in three matches and fell to 11-6 on the season.
