HWC blanks 'Chucks, beat G/M in 5

Harvey-Wells County cruised in their Region 4 volleyball matchup in Harvey with St. John on Tuesday, September 17. The Hornets held the Woodchucks to 30 total points in three games en route to winning their fifth game of the year against just three losses.

Braylee Keller started the night out on the right foot, as the sophomore had two kills to open game one. Kali Fike added an ace and a kill and HWC had a quick 6-1 lead. The lead grew to 11-1 on back-to-back kills from Rylee Jones. Three HWC service errors helped the Woodchucks, but the strong front line of HWC got three kills from Rachel Neumiller down the stretch for a 25-7 win in the opening game.

St. John was much better prepared to start game two, as the Woodchucks led 4-2 early in the set. Back-to-back aces from Brooklyn Dockter and Taylor Nelson gave HWC some momentum midway through. Three aces out of four points for Neumiller pushed the Hornet lead to 17-11, and again HWC dominated at the net at the end of set two, scoring the final five points on four kills and an ace for the 25-15 win.

Keller started game three with two kills in a row and followed that up with two aces in a row, giving HWC a 5-2 lead. Nelson recorded three kills, two aces and a block midway through game three, as the Hornets expanded their lead to 18-5. Two more aces from Neumiller and two more kills from Keller late in game lifted the Hornets to a 25-8 game three win and 3-0 match victory.

Keller led the Hornets with 12 kills and two blocks, while Neumiller led in digs and aces with 14 and five, respectively. Kali Fike led the Hornets in assists with 28.

The Woodchucks were led by Abigail Delorme with three kills, while Allise Poitra had nine digs. Delorme and Taryn Gores each had six digs for St. John.

HWC 3, Griggs/Midkota 2

Harvey-Wells County survived yet another five- game marathon, as they narrowly defeated the Griggs/Midkota Titans, 3-2, in Fessenden on Thursday, September 19.

The five-setter saw everything – big hitters, multiple blocks, great digs and team hustle – as the two teams treated the fans to an exciting non-region volleyball matchup.

The Hornets took a commanding lead late in the first set, as they opened up a 20-12 lead. The Hornets had some problems with serving and some attack errors, but the bigs of the Titans swatted away many HWC kill opportunities to work themselves back into game one. An 11-4 run pulled G/M to within one at 24-23, but two late kills from Keller gave HWC the 27-25 win.

The Hornets once again controlled game two, as the score was close at the start but HWC pulled ahead, 20-13 late. The Titans again made a nice comeback and used an 8-1 run to tie the game at 21 on a kill from Karsyn Halvorson. Two more attack errors from the Hornets resulted in a 25-23 game two win for G/M.

Games three and four were completely opposite as the first two. The Hornets opened up a big lead in game three and got a lot of help from the Titan attack errors to keep the lead. Maci Reutter came off the bench to give the Hornets a little more speed on the floor, and the move paid off as HWC won game three, 25-13.

Set four belonged to the Titans much the same way as game three did for HWC. Griggs/Midkota took a 18-9 lead on back-to-back kills from Alette Adrian, and then consecutive aces from Vanessa Vollmer sealed the win, 25-12, for the Titans to force a game deciding set five.

The Hornets opened up the final set on a 4-0 run and led 7-3, on a kill from Nelson. A kill from Neumiller moved the score to 9-4, and another kill from Nelson pushed the lead to 11-4. Neumiller's kill moved the score to 12-6, and the Hornets sealed the win at 15-7 on three consecutive long kill attempts from Griggs-Midkota.

Neumiller led a group of three players in double digit kills with 12, while Nelson added 11 and Keller chipped in with 10. Overall, HWC had 54 kills on the night.

Fike dished out 35 of the Hornets' 50 assists, while Nelson led in aces with three and was tied with Keller with four blocks a piece.

One of highlights of the night was the play of the Hornets' back row. Keller amassed 35 digs, while Brooklyn Dockter and Neumiller each tallied 25. Overall, HWC had 132 digs.

Griggs/Midkota was led by their front line. Kelsey Johnson led the Titans with 10 kills, while Emma McCullough led in assists with 31. Vollmer led G/M with 38 of the team's 117 digs.
