From the Past: Braaten receives coaches award

75 Years Ago

October 13, 1949

Held Motor Sales, local Oldsmobile agency owned and operated by John J. Held and son, John A., will be in a new location next week, having made arrangements to occupy the Steinman building on west Main Street. The firm has been operating in the Klindworth building.

A former Carrington resident, Brigadier General William A. Matheny, has been assigned as chief of staff of Continental Air Command’s newly established eastern air defense force at Mitchell Air Force Base in New York.

The ten winning districts in North Dakota’s second annual soil conservation achievement contest will receive $1,000 in cash from the Greater North Dakota Association at the recognition banquet to be held in Bismarck on Wednesday evening, Nov. 30, it is announced by LeRoy Pease, secretary.

Pease released the names of the winning districts and the farmers who placed first in the five western and five eastern districts, among them three from Foster County: Harvey Lyman, Grace City; Arnold McDaniel, Glenfield; Claus and Russell Otto, McHenry.

The Cardinals defeated the Fessenden Orioles by a 20-0 score on the home field Friday evening. The game was played much of the time in a driving rain, which made playing conditions on the soft field a muddy, soggy affair.

On Sept. 17, 1949, at St. Mary Magdelene Catholic Church in Los Angeles, Calif., Bonita Loesch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N.N. Loesch of Melville became the bride of Mr. Theodore S. Tucker, son of Mr. and Mrs. James I. Tucker of Van Nuys, in a double-ring ceremony with Father Conlon officiating.

A shower was given at the Heaton town hall last Sunday night for Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Reutter, who were married on Friday, Sept. 30. Over 200 guests attended, and the happy couple received many gifts. On Monday night, Mr. and Mrs. Reutter treated their friends to a free dance.

50 Years Ago

October 12, 1974

Chosen by fellow students at Carrington High School, John Landon and Roxanne Skitfun were crowned Homecoming King and Queen. Other candidates were Kim Goheen and Mark Evans, and Jenny Ringerud and David Swanson.

Rain and snow during the past week served to replenish soil moisture, which has been on the short side during fall months. The lack of showers following harvest has somewhat limited fall plowing and fertilization.

Ssgt. Hugo D. Loffelmacher, NCOIC for the 447th Strategic Mission Squadron, formerly of McHenry, was chosen “Outstanding NCO of the Month” of the 321st Strategic Missile Wing.

Sixty-five boys and girls participated in local “Punt, Pass and Kick” competition Oct. 5 at the Carrington High School football field. The contest is sponsored locally by Reimers Ford-Mercury and nationally by Ford Motor Company.

Carrington lost its homecoming football game to Grafton last Friday night by a score of 27-6.

New Rockford was the winner of a four-team cross country competition held in cool, wet conditions at Carrington on Oct. 4. Participants included 55 boys and two girls.

A layette shower for Aaron Lee, new son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Weippert, was held Friday evening at the Wayne Vigen home, with Mrs. Jack Rosenau the assisting hostess.

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Straley on Oct. 4 at the Carrington Hospital.

Lottie Graham and Levi Graham were married by Rev. Chris Miller in the Federated Church at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Milo Sage were attendants.

October 11, 1999

Joel Lemer, Carrington’s Ag instructor is the recipient of Milken Foundation program. Lemer is one of four in North Dakota to receive the award in 1999. The award carries a $25,000 cash gift to each recipient and is designated for personal use with no restrictions.

Carrington High School girls’ basketball coach Andy Braaten received the 1999 Stutsman County Invitational Coaches Award after the Cardinals placed second and had two team members, Ann Johnson and Jennifer Helm on the all-tournament team.

The New Rockford Central School graduating class of 1949 celebrated its 50th year class reunion on Sept. 17-19.

New Arrivals – Wayne and Denise Shipman, Carrington, are the parents of Jayden Wayne, born Oct. 4, at the Carrington Health Center; Jill Frances is the fourth daughter born to Greg and Jody Endres, Carrington, born at the Carrington Health Center on Sept. 29.

Obituaries – Raymond J. Anderson, 83, New Rockford, died Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Merit Care Hospital, Fargo; James Possen, 50, Sheyenne, died Thursday at Altru Medical Center in Grand Forks, N.D.

LeAnna Kollman of Carrington won the state title in the North Dakota State Women’s 600 Club tourney conducted at New Rockford’s Wonder Lanes, Sept. 25 - Oct. 3. Gail Roberts, New Rockford, took second place. There were 102 women from all over the state in the tournament, and there were a lot of averages in the 180’s and 190’s.

Bowdon News – A birthday party for Margaret Wipf was held at Cindy’s on Thursday. She will be moving to an apartment in Minot this week.

James and Doris Fortney attended a farewell dinner at the Chieftain for Jud and Gen Tracy on Friday.

Bob Suckut attended Roy Otto’s auction sale on Saturday.

Wednesday supper and birthday cake and ice cream guests at the Kim and Laura Hart home were Orval and Alyce Hart, Leonard and Troy Fike, Roxanne Anderson and Nona Flick and children. They celebrated Nickolas’ 11th birthday.
