There's only one place where you can get cozy by the fireplace or gather with friends under the arbor and experience the ambience of downtown Carrington.
It's The Garden Gate, a Central City institution for nearly 35 years.
This family owned shop located at 929 Main Street is a beautiful space offering specialty coffee drinks, daily lunches and a full liquor bar with appetizers and supper specials Wednesday to Friday evenings.
The gift shop features vintage, handmade, and repurposed home decor and accessories, as well as a variety of synthetic floral arrangements such as wreaths and bouquets. As the seasons change, so does the décor. Right now the scents, scenes and sounds of autumn are all around, and soon the colors will change to red and green, silver and gold as Christmas approaches.
Leann Voglewede first opened the doors to The Garden Gate in Carrington in 1990, and nearly 35 years later the business continues to serve the community six days a week. Over the years Voglewede had additional locations in Fargo, Jamestown and Devils Lake. Yet it's the flagship Carrington store that remains, filling an even larger void downtown now than when it all began.
Home for the Garden Gate are two historic brick buildings full of character and charm, Main Street mainstays since the early 1900s.
Leann is a lifelong resident of Carrington who runs the store with her small but mightly staff of four local women who serve up lattes, ring up lamps and prepare lunch for their loyal patrons.
While many residents and visitors choose to start their day with a cup of espresso or cold brew from the Garden Gate, others stop there for a quick sandwich or salad lunch during the workweek. And then there's the newest addition to the lineup, their dinner service, served Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 5 pm to 8 pm. The evening menu features appetizers, salads, flatbreads, burgers, sandwiches and wraps, as well as a variety of adult beverages.
The Garden Gate also hosts Trivia Night a few times a year, with proceeds going to the local youth center, and is a sponsor of Carrington's annual JunkFest.
The doors are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Take out is available anytime during business hours, so call (701) 652-3527 and place your order.
On the eve of Pasta Fest, stop in to the Garden Gate and sample a rigatoni dish, peruse the gift shop and then make sure to stay for a drink and an appetizer, or better yet settle in for a meal.
At 929 Main, she'll leave the gate open for you.
