Pazdernik's All-State finish, Senior Athlete honor among top local highlights -

A pleasant breeze and mid-50 degree weather provided almost-perfect running conditions for the State Class B Cross Country Meet at Parkhurst Recreation Area north of Jamestown Friday afternoon, Oct. 25. It was a far cry from last year's meet, which was blanketed by a fresh layer of snow and frigid temperatures.

The climate allowed for some fast times, and Carrington senior Kenadie Pazdernik capped off a great scholastic running career with a pair of honors.

Pazdernik finished in seventh place for the girls with a clocking of 19 minutes, 55.9 seconds, earning All-State honors for the fourth time, and was selected as the Class B Female Senior Athlete of the Year following the race.

She and her Cardinal teammates achieved a top-10 finish with 374 points.

Out of local finishers, Griggs/Midkota eighth grader Kadence Spickler crossed the line just six places out of the top 20, taking 26th in 20:49.6 and almost 14 seconds short of All-State status.

Next in the top 50 were back-to-back finishes by Macy Fiebiger of CHS (42nd, 21:24.3) and Tianna McCardle of G/M (21:25.4).

Cardinal runners also included Kahri Kollman (78th), Joie Helseth (110th), Jaedyn Lura (137th), Anna VanRay (146th), Grace Inglish (159th), Molly Fiebiger (170th) and Jamisyn Schroeder (173rd).

While no local runners made All-State on the boys' side, there was a top 50 finisher in the person of G/M's Ziggidy Berg (44th, 18:25). Reid Ressler (18:43.7) was 56th for the Titans, who placed 11th in the team standings with 475 points.

Seventh-grader Chayse Steadmon was the top Carrington runner, taking 121st in 19:52.6. He was followed by Gabe Inglish (134th), Gavyn Steadmon (138th), Henry Pavelko (206th), Sam Garr (210th), Kreed Kirkeby (222nd), Howie Simonson (290th) and Ben Gustafson (292nd).

The NR-S Rockets had one runner place in the top 100, as seventh-grader Liza Steele took 75th in the girls' race.

The 2024 edition of the state competition featured the continuation of one of North Dakota's small school dynasties, as well as a changing of the guard in the girls' individual race.

Bowman County won their fifth consecutive boys' team championship and 20th in program history with a sparkling 26 points, getting six total All-State runners in the top 20. Jonah Njos repeated as individual champion, running 15:39 to win by almost seven seconds over runner-up Owen Johnson of Northern Cass.

For the girls, seventh grade phenom Claire Grinde of Hillsboro/Central Valley ended the three-year championship reign of Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark's Brynn Hanson by an even 32 seconds (18:50.3), and allowed the Burros to win their ninth team title following a run of eight straight wins from 2011-2018.

HCV had one runner with local ties make the All-State squad. Burro junior Niko Zink finished in 12th place overall in 17:06.7. He is the son of HCV Coach Kirk Zink and Karrie Zink, and the grandson of Dean and Becky Zink of Carrington and Randy Habeck Sr. and the late Mary Habeck, formerly of Barlow.
