Medina/Pingree-Buchanan had a solid case as the "1-B" to Linton-HMB's number one position in the District 6 pecking order, as one of just four teams to defeat the Lions this season and a five-set loser in district play earlier in the year.
However, the top-ranked team in the Class B volleyball poll took care of business on their home court Tuesday night, November 5, with a 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 18-25) defeat of the Thunder at district tournament play in Hazelton.
Maddie Gefroh had 15 kills and three blocks, and Brynn Sorenson contributed 13 kills of her own against the Lions. Sorenson, along with Cierra Mack, were the top passers in the back with 25 and 24 digs, respectively, and Violet Bohl had 31 assists.
In their first game, the Thunder (27-6 following tourney play) were matched up with fourth-seeded Kidder County. M/P-B advanced with a 25-9, 25-17 and 25-13 victory.
Gefroh had 18 kills, followed by Sorenson's 10. Jorgen Tripp, Shayla Martin and Sorenson were a wall at the net with 10 combined blocks, while Sorenson also finished with 25 digs and Bohl put up 27 assists.
Gefroh, Sorenson and Bohl were all named to the All-District 6 Team at the end of the tournament. Additionally, Gefroh was also honored with the District 6 Senior Athlete of the Year Award, while Thunder Coach Jacie Connell was named the district's Coach of the Year.
