In their final season playing in the current Class B setup, Carrington was gunning for their second state tournament appearance in program history, and first since making the field for the elite eight 11 years ago.
As part of the first two teams coming off the bus at the Region 3 Tournament in Hazelton, maintaining their momentum from the Cardinals' District 5 championship victory the previous week was paramount.
The Cards took the best shots from District 6 fourth seed South Border, and played solid team volleyball in a 25-16, 25-13 and 25-22 win to conclude the Mustangs' season Monday afternoon, Nov. 11.
With the lights shining ever and ever more brightly, District 5's selection for Top Senior Athlete, Isabel Wendel, put her stamp on the quarterfinal round.
Wendel would clock out for the afternoon with a team-best 14 kills, and also struck three aces for the Cards while also getting 15 assists in rotational setting duties split with Brynn Smith (17 assists).
Mercedes Lura swung for nine kills, Calleigh Hewitt seven and Kaydence VanRay six in the Cards' attacker-by-committee offense.
Net play belonged to Edyn Hoornaert, as the senior got her hands on six blocked shots to frustrate the South Border attack.
The Cards' active back row was led by senior libero Kenadie Pazdernik with 31 digs. Sophomore Harper Kollman finished with 16 digs and Wendel contributed 11 more.
With the win, Carrington (20-10 overall) took on M/P-B (see above article) in the semifinal round on Tuesday. The Mustangs' year concluded with a record of 9-16.
In other first round matches, the top-ranked Linton-HMB Lions showed some vulnerability at times in taking a second set loss to the Oakes Tornadoes, but won the first, third and fourth sets to claim a 25-10, 17-25, 25-12 and 25-20 win and advance to the semifinals with a 30-4 mark.
The nightcap provided some drama, as the E-K-M Rebels survived an upset bid from the Kidder County Wolves in a 25-20, 25-11, 20-25, 20-25, 15-9 win.
