A Pembina County farm family, the J.J. Whelans of Crystal, have been named North Dakota state winners in the 1949 WNAX farmstead improvement program, the Yankton-Sioux City radio station has announced.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Leppke, whose farmstead was judged Foster County winner, were runners-up in the selection of the state winner. They will be awarded $50.00 in merchandise.
Next Tuesday night, Dec. 13, the local independents meet the Harlem Hobos, a traveling-colored team, on the local court. This team of trick ball handlers have players selected from some of the top-colored teams in the nation. Last year, this team won 127 games and lost 12.
Carrington High School lost two basketball games this week with Anamoose winning 27-21 here last Friday night and Fessenden taking a 44-43 victory there Tuesday night.
Sophia Garnacarek, a displaced person, arrived at Dr. W.C. Voglewede home on Nov. 12 from Germany, where she had lived seven years. She is originally from Poland and speaks the Polish and German languages fluently. She is 29 years old and will be employed by the Vogelwedes.
Oil paving of some of the streets in Carrington was brought a step closer to reality Monday night when the city council discussed the project at some length before turning it over to the public improvements committee for investigation.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bjerke of Sykeston were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clark, S.D. The honored guests were visiting relatives there.

The 95th birthday of Barney Reutter was celebrated Nov. 3 at the Hurdsfield school with 111 family members and friends signing the guest book.
The Country Kitchen on Highway 281 adjoining Carrington was opened for business Tuesday evening according to plans of the owners and manager.
A preview showing was scheduled for local people beginning at 5 p.m. and the place was to be open for business at 9 p.m. Bob Kautzman, native of Carrington, is manager.
Mrs. Lillian Wolsky, Chris Wolsky, Mrs. Jerald Wolsky and Jeffery of Kensal, David Wolsky of Fargo, Mr and Mrs. Leon Hoggarth and Mrs. Edward Wolsky of Valley City, attended the funeral for Christian Jon Wolsky, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Wolsky, Corvallis, Mont. on Nov. 19. Christian Jon was killed by an accidental gunshot while hunting in the mountains with a friend, Nov. 16.
The “Comets,” coached by Joni Bronaugh, defeated the “Cards,” directed by Penne Skadberg, in women’s basketball held at the CHS’ gym by 26-16.
Leading the victors was Linda Erickson with 15 points. Teresa Straley scored four. Other Comet players were Arlene Schroeder, Mary Sharbono, Rosemary Skitfun, Bev Erickson, Barb Schroeder and Jo Noack.
The Cards were led by Jolean Haugen and Dianne Larson with four points each. Evie Skytland and Mindy Erickson had three each. Janice Lura, Carol Rosenau, JoNell Schweitzer and Peggy Dell also played for the Cards.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bix, Clarinda, Iowa, announce the engagement of their daughter, Rebecca, to Tom Ihringer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claire Ihringer, Carrington. Dec. 28 is the date set for the wedding.

Carrington Health Center is struggling with budget cuts. The cuts are largely due to impacts of the Federal Balanced Budget Act passed in July, 1997. The legislation reduced Medicare expenditures to hospitals in the amount of $190 billion over the next five years. The first reduction, effective July, 1998, will affect home health agencies. The reduction will be approximately $600,000 less reimbursement.
Jane Vogelwede, daughter of Rosemary Vogelwede, Carrington, has become a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Seven-month-old Zachary Magnuson was the winner of a Christmas Bear given away at Carrington’s Alco store. The Christmas Bear is a trademark for the company. Alco gave away 174 of them this Christmas, one in each store across the country.
Carol Jean “CJ” Cummings, a Carrington native, was honored at a retirement ceremony Nov. 3 at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. Cummings’ retirement came after 29 years of civil service. She retired as the secretary to the 28th Bomb Wing Commander there.
Recent births – Tricia and Michael Schlegel, Bowdon, are parents of a baby boy, Cody, born Nov. 21 at the Carrington Health Center. He weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces.
Obituaries – Gary Vande Hoven, 83, Carrington, died Thursday, Nov. 25 at Golden Acres Manor; Conrad Nisstad, 76, Glenfield, died Sunday, Nov. 28, at Carrington Health Center.
