Ybarra wins 136-pound title in girls meet; C. Garber finishes second at 189 for boys -

Kirby Freeman won four matches for the Cardinal boys in Velva at 215 pounds, placing eighth overall.
The numbers game was on full display for the Carrington wrestling program, and it showed in the team scores for each squad at the Velva Invitational Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7.
Fourteen wrestlers on the girls' side helped carry CHS to the tournament title in the Star City with 172.5 points for a 52-plus point victory, while the boys' eight competitors in the 14 weight classes finished with 188 points to take eighth place.
In most tournaments, teams will have a designated point scorer for weight classes with multiple entrants. There was no such restriction in Velva, as any wrestler could score team points as long as they win matches.
The Cardinal girls had one champion, Jazmyn Ybarra, at 136 pounds. The senior's focus was on scoring points, with all three of her match victories ending by technical fall.
Additional major point contributions came from runner-up placings by Aysa Reimche (106) in her round robin bracket, and finals berths by Juliet Davis (118), Khendra Garcia (124) and Madalina Ciubotareanu (148).
Third place went to Grace Inglish (100) and Kendall Kovar (142), while Adisyn Vande Hoven (118) was fourth. Nevaeh Sorensen (170) won three matches to take fifth, and Jamisyn Schroeder (100) and Paige Studdard (124) also cracked the top five.
CHS' boys brought a short-handed lineup to Velva, but there were several standout performances for the Cards.
Callen Garber, at 189 pounds, was the tournament runner-up. He won two matches before losing in the finals to last year's second place state finisher in the weight class, Cole Henderson of Northern Lights.
Three other grapplers wrestled their way to third place, with Skye Kramlich (114), Dru Carr (121) and Nic Garber (152) going a combined 11-3 for the two days. Max Ciubotareanu took fifth place at 160 pounds with four victories.
Though they didn't place highly, both Kirby Freeman and Jacob Hinrichs had success at times in a very loaded 215-pound bracket. Both Freeman (eighth place) and Hinrichs (10th) were credited with four wins.
Both host Velva and Williams County (Tioga/Ray) put 22 wrestlers on the floor, and the Aggies rolled to 339.5 points and the meet win. The Firestorm scored 298, followed by Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central (279.5), Bowman County/Beach (260) and Northern Lights (228) in the top five.
On deck on the tournament front is the Border Brawl for the girls, hosted by South Border at Ashley High School on Dec. 21, and the Linton Holiday Tournament for the boys Dec. 20-21 before the Christmas break.
