CHS sophomore forward Taylen Mehring had a hot start to his season, scoring 14 points against St. John and hitting a trio of three-pointers for 13 points in a loss to Shiloh Christian.
The opener out of the gates is not a representative sample size, but the Carrington boys basketball team multiplied their total combined margin of victory in their two wins last season by a factor of five.
CHS began the 2024-25 season with a 65-50 win in St. John over the Woodchucks, a game which featured a career-high 19 points from junior Maddox McIlonie.
Senior point guard Josh Bickett also had 17 points for the Cards in the season debut, and Taylen Mehring, a sophomore, also scored 14. Tate Wolsky added nine.
The Woodchucks had a 21-point showing from Ashton Parisien in the loss. Jaxon Charbonneau also had 13 for St. John.
The high-octane offense of the Shiloh Christian Skyhawks came to the East Gym for the Cards' home opener last Tuesday evening, Dec. 17.
A slow start killed Carrington's chances, but they cut the Shiloh lead to single digits on several occasions before the visitors pulled away in a 69-49 non-region loss for CHS.
The Skyhawks (2-0) got 18 points from senior point guard Wyatt Westin, while backcourt-mate Dawson Davis also made the Cards' lives difficult with 16 points.
McIlonie once again was the top scorer with 14 points for CHS, while Mehring had 13 points, including three three-point shots, and Bickett 12.
CHS takes on Nedrose Friday, Dec. 27 and Watford City on Saturday, Dec. 28, for the Carrington Shootout. Times are listed below.
