From the Past: Dylan Michael first baby of the new millennium born at CHC

75 Years Ago

January 12, 1950

Aloys Wartner, Sr., Harvey, veteran Wells County attorney, is chairman of a new organization, known as the Krueger-For-Governor club, which was formed at a meeting in Fessenden Monday evening. L.O. Forseth of Fessenden is secretary of the club.

The club will seek to induce Otto Krueger, now state insurance commissioner, to run for governor in the coming election. Krueger has announced he will not seek re-election to the post he has held for several years.

The Rugby Panthers, completing their second game of their two-day road trip, swamped the Cardinals 60-21 in a basketball set-to here last Saturday evening. The Rugby team was a fast, eager aggregation that displayed considerable ability and aggressiveness and had complete control of the play at all times. On the night before, the Panthers had defeated Fessenden 44-21.

Matt Wetzstein, Jr., Carrington, was chosen chairman of the board of county commissioners in session here last week. He succeeds Lars Tollefson, chairman in 1949.

The American Legion and its auxiliary, Carrington, have joined in the national Legion campaign known as “Tide of Toys,” a project for the collection of toys for shipment to Europe to be distributed among children who did not have a happy Christmas because of conditions brought on by the last war.

Now in operation in Carrington is a new business, the Carrington Sausage Co., with Al Heuschkel and Galen Breitenbach as proprietors. The business is located in the basement of the SuperValu store, where new, modern equipment has been installed.

50 Years Ago

January 8, 1975

New manager of the Carrington J.C. Penney store is Jim Thompson, who came from Watertown, S.D. to replace Gordon Thorstad, who was moved to Albion, Mich., to be manager there.

More than $200,000 in stock was retired by Farmers Union Oil Co. of Carrington during 1974, including about $148,000 in stock retirement checks issued in December.

Two more changes in ownership of long familiar uptown Carrington business operations have taken place at end of the year – sale of Central Insurance Agency by Ed and Olga Winterer to Ed and Peggy Smith and sale of Schutt’s Hotel Café by Russell Schutt to Joanne Garland.

When Ed Winterer left Central Insurance Agency at the end of the year it marked the first time in 72 years that there was not a Winterer in business in Carrington. Central Insurance Agency is continuation of a business founded by Ed’s father H.L. Winterer, in 1903.

The post office and postmaster at Edmunds will be moved to Pingree, according to the U.S. Postal Service Fargo district office.

Richard Anwiler, postmaster at Edmunds, has been named postmaster for Pingree, according to the U.S. Postal Service Fargo district office.

Among winter quarter courses to be given by N.D. State University Continuing Studies, Career Education, Ed 460 will be given at Cooperstown starting Jan. 9. Dr. Ron Semmens of Mayville, S.C. will be instructor of the course, which provides three quarter hours of University credit.

Edson A. Roach, 80, former Carrington businessman died at Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Dec. 29. Funeral was held Dec. 31 at Fort Lauderdale.

January 10, 2000

Dylan Michael didn’t know he made history as the first baby of the new millennium born at Carrington Health Center. Dylan is the first child of Krystal Marcotte and Hank Stoppleworth of Sykeston. He made his appearance Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000 at 4:42 a.m. He weighed in at 9 pounds, 7.2 ounces.

Ken Hansen, formerly of Aberdeen, S.D. is the new manager at Carrington’s Country General store. Hansen had been with the company for six years as assistant manager at the Aberdeen store.

Jeff Riedesel has joined Central Insurance and Real Estate Inc. as a specialist in the agricultural division of that office.

The winners of the Family and Community Education writing contest are Casey Caylor, second grade, the son of Don and Lynette Caylor; Cable Horning, a fourth grader at Prairie View Elementary and the son of Dale and Carmen McManus; and Dylan Zwinger, fourth grade, the son of Steve and Duane Zwinger. The contest asked students to focus on nationality as a theme this year.

Seth Berge, is a junior at Midkota High School, Glenfield, won the district Voice of Democracy essay contest held recently in Jamestown.

Area births – Joel and Marvae Gussiaas are parents of a baby girl, Jessica Joel, born Dec. 28 at Carrington Health Center. She weighed 7 lbs. and 10 oz.

Area Weddings – Debra Hoppe and Wesley Leapaldt were married Oct. 23 at Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington with Pastor Harvala officiating the double ring ceremony.

Area Obituaries – Evelyn J. Lynne, 84, Carrington died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Carrington Health Center Long Term Care; Kenneth O. Foster, 97, New Rockford, died Dec. 23, 1999, at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd; Manfred Bymoen, 91, New Rockford, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd.
