The pages of the Independent from January through June, 2024, held some unsettling news in the first quarter.
Between the loss of former Independent publisher Allen Stock, Midkota School Superintendent Ryan Baron being charged with possession of certain materials prohibited,and Patricia Wick pleading guilty to murder for the death of a child at her daycare, the community had high hopes for better days to come.
Luckily the second quarter was a saving grace in the area, as residents had a lot to smile about, especially on the court and in the field.
Here are a few of the stories that donned the pages of the Independent last year:
January
• Allen Stock, publisher of the Foster County Independent since 1976, passed away on Christmas Day, 2023.
• Midkota Superintendent Ryan Baron made his initial court appearance for allegedly possessing videos that depicted sexual acts between adults and children.
• The Carrington Girls' Wrestling Team took 6th place at the Rumble on the Red Wrestling Tournament in Fargo.
• Carrington Public School introduced a petition to the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) regarding the boys basketball program's present alignment in Division A.
The appeal was presented at the NDHSAA's Basketball Classification Committee meeting on January 16.
• Former Carrington daycare provider Patricia Wick pled guilty to murder and child abuse during her trial after being accused of killing a five-month-old infant in her care.
February
• The Carrington Cardinaires swept four events at the NDADD State Dance Competition.
Twelve years after the Carrington Cardinaires made history at the North Dakota Association of Dance and Drill (NDADD) state championship by winning an unprecedented four-event sweep, they did it again.
• Dru Carr and Corbin Clifton both finished as runner-up wrestlers at the East-West Tournament in New Salem, with the boys taking 9th place.
• The Carrington Girls took 10th place at the Belle of the Brawl at Central Cass High School in Casselton, with Khendra Garcia taking the runner-up podium finish.
• Cows & Co. Creamery of Carrington received the Grand Champion and People's Choice awards at the 6th Annual Fargo Hotdish Festival in Fargo with their Dutch Stamppot, a traditional Dutch hotdish which is the national dish of the Netherlands.
• CHS boys wrestlers finished as runners-up at the Region 2 Dual Tournament in Larimore, while the girls took a second place finish at the East Region Tournament held at the Central Cass High School.
• CHS Athletic Director Karla Michaelson was named Dean of Students.
• Midkota Superintendent Ryan Baron was jailed on alleged new child porn charges.
• Carrington Public School released new secure entrance addition plans.
• Corbin Clifton captured the wrestling crown taking the state championship at 152 pounds.
March
• Griggs County Elementary Student and Binford resident Alfred Eggermont vied for the title "Master Chef" on the television show "MasterChef Junior."
• Mike Koenig won the state championship in the masters division at the 39th North Dakota Taxidermists Association Convention.
• Travis Wong of Basil received the Service Award from the Healthy Communities Coalition.
• Mason Wede of rural Carrington opened Nodak Drones and started a drone spraying business.
• The Carrington Pit Crew wrestlers won the Lisbon Dual Tournament
April
• Carrington FFA received gold at state Agronomy, Ag. Sales.
• Four of the Carrington Gymnastics Club gymnasts earned automatic qualification for the Xcel Regionals to be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
• Kristopher Abshere pled guilty to a Class A felony charge for impregnating a 14-year-old girl in 2022.
• The senior Foster County agronomy judging 4-H team finished first out of six teams at the state contest.
• At the Thundering Herd Classic at NDSU the Cards won the girls' portion of the meet with 72 points, with the boys getting a trio of second places.
• The Carrington PitCrew youth wrestling club wrestled to a 4-1 record to take third place in the Large Team division at the North Dakota USA State Folkstyle Dual Tournament.
• Patricia Wick was sentenced to 40 years in prison with 20 years suspended and 10 years of supervised probation.
• The Carrington Cardinals took the wrestling meet victory with 141 points at the Bison Stampede in Hazen.
• After 13 years, Dakota Sun Winery was sold to Devin Quick as the Gussiaases retired.
• Madison Johnson broke her own school record in the 1,600-meter run at the Fargo Elite Meet held at NDSU.
