January 1, 2025

On Tuesday morning, Dec. 31, law enforcement were engaged in a brief standoff with an individual in Binford, N.D.

According to a press release from Griggs County Sheriff Amberly Michaelis, law enforcement were dispatched to the BinCity Saloon in Binford for a "disturbance involving a single individual."

Michaelis said the disturbance turned out to be a mental health emergency.

"Upon arriving it was determined there was an individual in the midst of a mental health crisis," reads the press release. "Officers were able to deescalate the situation by minimizing the danger to the public and maintaining their own safety from a distance."

The individual had a gun and reportedly shot two rounds, neither of which were directed at officers or anyone else.

Ultimately the person surrendered to law enforcement after a brief standoff, and was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.

The name of the individual is not being released by law enforcement.

The Griggs County Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Foster County Sheriff's Department, Eddy County Sheriff's Department and the Steele County Sheriff's Department, as well as the N.D. Highway Patrol.
